| From Mountain to Sea |
Many foreigners do not suspect that Lebanon is a place of lush greenery and of snow. is a In the more arid Arab countries, Lebanon is called Lubnan al-akhdar, Lebanon the Green. Yet its name, which t bears since the most remote antiquity, itself means "white", a reference to the snow-capped peaks that could be seen by travelers coming from the East – a most remarkable sight in a region that lacks both mountains and water. The importance of the Lebanese mountains is tremendous, as the country's shoreline is 2 or 3 miles wide at most, and often nonexistent, as in places the cliffs dip straight into the sea. The Sea and the Mountain are to thank for our mild weather and abundant water: the one prevents the temperature from varying widely, the other stops the rainclouds on their way inland, allowing rain to fall abundantly. |

| Sites |
With one city, Byblos, that's been continuously inhabited since the 3rd millenium BC and a string of others that followed closely, Lebanon has a venerable past of its own, enriched by the fact every civilization that had any business in the region left traces there. |

| Living cities |
It would be a mistake to visit Lebanon's historical sites and leave no time for today's cities. I love to walk around Beirut with an eye for things we take for granted, whether textures, endearing decay, stunning architectural details lovingly crafted nearly 100 years ago, or the sometimes anarchic but always interesting ways in which its inhabitants breathe life into it.

| People |
Lebanon is a country of minorities with no one religious group dominating the scene, deeply accustomed and even attached to their differences despite appearances to the contrary. It is also a land of fiercely independent and self-reliant individuals with a centuries-old disregard for authority (leading to amusing or aggravating situations, depending), but whose friendliness and love of life are instantly evident to the visitor. |

| Street Art |
There's relatively little tagging to be seen in Lebanon, but in recent years stencil fever has taken hold of the younger portion of art and design circles, leading to the blossoming of often very elaborate visuals in certain parts of the city. As of mid-2009, street art has taken off to the point that the original artistic statements are receding in the face of new, quickly made and poorly though-out, even vulgar designs (a trend that I hope will fade as the hipsters move on to the next "cool" thing to do), but there's still many a brilliant idea to spot on Beirut walls, especially after a juicy news item. The stencils below have been categorized. I don't necessarily like all of them, some I consider immature or irrelevant, but I'm including all I have anyway.
